Play under construction is a large-scale construction kit designed for children aged 7-12. It invites them to build life-sized structures using real tools and materials - wooden dowels and planks, metal connectors, wrenches, nuts, washers, and threaded rods. The goal? To give children the power to shape their surroundings, even if just for a moment.
As children grow, construction play often becomes smaller and more contained, changing from immersive, full-body experiences to something that fits on a table, in front of the child. This project challenges that. It recognises the importance of hands-on, collaborative, and imaginative play at an age when children are developing independence and a stronger sense of agency.
Developed through workshops and direct interaction with children, the project used a user-centered, hands-on design approach. In a world full of digital tools, this kit offers an analog alternative – one that builds confidence, creativity, and motor skills.
Play under construction isn’t just a toy - it’s a tool for exploration and collaboration.
